School Bus Laws in Virginia: Keep our Kids Safe and STOP for the Yellow Beasts

It's September Already!

....and the kids are back in school. This means it is even more important to be vigilant on the road in Hampton Roads.

It's impossible to miss the herds of yellow school busses rolling through our neighborhoods and plying our secondary roads. Yes, it can be frustrating when you're running late and you find yourself behind a school bus that is stopping every few blocks and you need to go! Shake off that sense of urgency and remember that these yellow beasts are transporting some very special cargo.

In fact, Virginia has two laws that address failure to stop for a school bus when it is loading or unloading passengers, and a conviction of either will cost you;

One falls under a reckless driving statute (VA 46.2-859) and if convicted, is a Class 1 misdemeanor that issues 6 demerit points per the VA DMV and will likely result in you losing your license for 6 months, a fine up to $2,500 and the possibility of going to jail.

The second law (VA 46.2-844) penalty is less severe, but if convicted you face 6 demerit points issued by VA DMV on your driving record and a fine of up to $250.00.

Fines and penalties aside, stopping for a school bus loading or unloading its precious cargo ensures that a worst-case scenario doesn't happen.

Know when to Stop!

Know when to Stop!

Being mindful of a stopped school bus isn't enough. Be aware of them on the road as well;

  • Know that the school bus driver can’t always see you. When a bus is attempting to switch lanes or to make a turn, yield to them and give them plenty of room. Follow at a safe distance as they do make frequent stops. Mind the lights when they flash. Never pass a school bus when yellow lights are flashing, it's about to stop!
  • When driving through school zones, follow the speed limit. School zones have special speed limits when in session because many kids walk to school. Watch for crossing guards and obey all traffic rules and regulations when you are on or passing through a school campus.

Be safe on the road. Keep your vehicle properly maintained. Replace worn wiper blades. Make sure that your headlights are working and in good condition. What's the condition of your tires? Your brakes?
