What to look Out for When Buying a Used Harley

Now that spring is upon us, many bikes will begin to come out of hibernation. This can be a good time for Harley enthusiasts to take a look at what's on the market and, maybe, acquire one of their own. Yet, the retail price for one such American icon can be above their budget, or they may be looking for a particular model, in which case, they will have to look at used Harleys.

Buying second-hand is not as straightforward as buying new, and there are certain aspects that need to be given special attention. So, what should prospective owners need to know when looking for a Harley to call their own?

White HarleyFirst and Foremost

Before we can get into any details about buying an used Harley, you must first know what model suits you best. All seasoned riders can attest that not all bikes are the same when it comes to drivability. Inexperienced riders should take this seriously. Otherwise, they could set themselves up for a disappointment or even a potential accident down the line. Depending on your build and your level of riding experience, you might consider going for a smaller model. These are easier to handle in a curve or when stopping short.

Owner or Dealer?

If you decide to buy a used Harley, you have two options. You either go to an owner directly or a dealer. If you decide to go to an owner, there are certain risks you may need to prepare for. You will have to properly inspect the bike to make sure that it doesn't have black harleyany major mechanical or electrical problems that the owner may not be willing to share freely. Once you buy it and there are, in fact, problems, there isn't much you can do to recoup your losses.

As for dealerships, we can't speak for all of them out there, but at Mike Duman Auto Superstore, we make sure that every bike is street ready and in prime condition before we put it up for sale. We have a reputation to uphold, after all, and we'll happily offer ours for a test drive when you’re up for it.

Cosmetics

back end harleyWhen inspecting a bike, pay close attention to any signs of leakage, corrosion, mismatched paint, scratches, dents, or a misaligned/bent frame as these may indicate a previous accident or improper care. Also, pay close attention to signs of wear on the seat, tires, and chain. Do not forget to check that the VIN and engine numbers coincide.

Mechanical and Electrical

Once the ignition is on and the engine starts, preferably after 2 to 3 seconds, check all electrical systems like lights, brake lights, high and low beams, turn signals, horn, and the speedometer and make sure that they are all in working condition. Look out for any warning lights that stay on.

flame harleyListen for any clicking or clattering engine noises. There should also be no white smoke upon startup. Check the oil. If it is too black, it is an indicator that it hasn't been changed in a while. Also look for any signs of emulsion, as this signifies water in the oil. Check under the filler cap of the gas tank for any signs of rust or mismatched paint. If the fuel has a varnish-like smell, it may indicate that it has been a while since the bike last operated. All of these are potential problems that can cost well into the thousands to repair.
