Begin your awesome excursion along the Atlantic coastline in Old Town, an area in Alexandria with a European flair. It features old-world architecture complemented by the waterfront backdrop of the Potomac River. You’ll love browsing through the shops on cobblestone streets with gas lamps on the corners. Old Town is home to Gadsby's Tavern Museum, a popular attraction comprised of two late 18th century buildings that were frequented by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Open-air eating spots are located on King Street and by the river so you can enjoy fresh seafood, wood-fired pizza, steaks and more.

Mount Vernon

Approximately eight miles south of Old Town is the Mount Vernon estate of George and Martha Washington. The sprawling grounds and two-and-a-half-story museum are open to the public. A humble one-and-a-half-story home built by Washington's father in 1734 was transformed into a 21-room mansion. Among the highlights is the framed key to the Bastille prison that was instrumental in the French Revolution. Be sure to plan your visit to the museum in advance because tour tickets are timed and there is quite a lot to explore.

Skyline Drive

Continue driving south to experience the next leg of your road trip. It will take roughly three hours to drive the extent of the 105-mile Skyline Drive route. The speed limit is 35 mph to travel through the Shenandoah National Park, which spans the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains. With close to 75 overlooks, you may get a peek at white-tailed deer or black bears. There are four different access points to Skyline Drive where a park entrance fee will be charged. If you choose to stop and explore the park, it features hiking trails that include the Appalachian Trail, campgrounds and wildlife.
